Auto
accidents can be frightening experience. The key is to stay calm, to contact
the police and collect the appropriate information from the other drivers
involved in the accident so that your claim can be resolved efficiently and
effectively.
Screeching tyres. A thunderous crash.
Shattering glass. If you have ever been involved in an auto accident, these sounds may be all too familiar. You may also remember feeling angry, panic-stricken and
uncertain of what to do afterwards.
It’s always best to be prepared. One in
every eight drivers will have a car crash this year, according to the National
Safety Council. If you are one of those unlucky drivers, keeping your composure
by taking these simple steps post-accident can prevent additional injuries,
reduce costs and expedite vehicle repairs.
Pull
over. Pull your vehicle off the road and make sure it is out of
harm’s way.
Check
for injuries. Check if anyone is injured. If so, call 999.
Call
the police. No matter how minor the accident, make sure you call the
police to report the accident. Call the PLUS Helpline as well if you are on the
North-South Expressway.
Exchange
insurance info. Record the phone number and address of all drivers
involved. Record the license plate number, insurance ID, make the model of
every car involved. Don’t discuss who is at fault. Leave that to the
investigators.
Record
details. Immediately record the details of the accidents including the
date, time, location and weather conditions. Take photos of your vehicle and
the accident scene from every angle.
Talk
to witnesses. If you notice any witnesses, take down their names and
phone numbers.
Make
a police report. After the police have completed the accident report, ask
for a copy.
Call
your insurance company. Do it as soon as possible or during the next
working day.
